Version 1.3 of Cricket Logo works with both the Serial and USB IR
beamers. Make sure to select the proper COM port corresponding to
your beamer (you can try them one at a time if you are not sure).
If using the Serial Beamer, make sure it has a 9v battery and that
it's turned on. Then aim the Beamer toward a Cricket (anywhere
from 6 inches to a meter away) and you're ready to use the Cricket
software!
Cricket Logo software for Macintosh OS 8.6 9.x.
Crickets require a serial port to communicate from the host
computer. Apple no longer builds serial ports into Macs (beginning
with the launch of the iMac). So if you have a recent Mac, you'll
need a USB-to-serial converter.
The best USB-to-serial adapters are made by Keyspan. Their least expensive
model, the High
Speed USB Serial adapter, works fine and provides a PC-standard
serial port (DB9-male), so no additional special cables are necessary.
This model has a list price of $39.95; see Keyspan's dealer list for
information on ordering.
If you have an older Mac with a round "minidin-8" serial port, you
need either (a Mac modem cable and a DB25-female-to-DB9-male PC mouse adapter)
or (a serial adapter for Palm handhelds, minidin-8-to-DB9-male). Using
these cables, plug the Cricket's Serial-to-IR-Interface into your
Mac's modem or printer port. Make sure the Interface has a 9v battery
and that it's turned on. Then aim the Interface toward a Cricket
(anywhere from 6 inches to a meter away) and you're ready to use the
Cricket software!
Super and Handy Cricket software for Macintosh OS X
You need either the CXIR-USB Cricket
Beamer or a USB-serial adapter that works with Mac OS X.
Drivers for the CXIR-USB Beamer are available here. Make sure to get the
right ones for your Mac OS X version and architecture (Intel or PPC).
If you choose a USB-serial adapter with the Cricket Serial Beamer,
please be aware than many USB-serial adapters do not come with Mac OS
X drivers. Two choices that work are the Keyspan
and a lower-cost
alternative.
