ASSIGNMENT 1
DUE FRIDAY SEPT 6, 2002

Course Text
The course textbook is Structured Computer Organization, 4th Ed. by Andrew S. Tanenbaum, ©1999 Prentice-Hall, ISBN 0130959901. The cover image is shown below.

Assignment

1. Get the book. (Make sure it’s the 4th edition.)

2. Read Chapter 1, pages 1–38.

3. Find three devices in your everyday life that can be classified as “computers” or contain embedded computers, according to Tanenbaum’s Figure 1–9 “computer spectrum.” (Find examples other than your PC or game console.) For each of the three, make an analytical guess as to how much memory the device contains, expressed as a number of bits. In a couple paragraphs for each, explain your thinking.

The assignment is due at the beginning of class, Friday Sept 6. Turn it in as hard copy. A printout is preferred, but neatly hand-written is acceptable.
