DesignThinking

Design Thinking Reading Group

a weekly reading/discussion group, Fall 2007 semester

Dear UMass Lowell students, staff, and faculty colleagues:

I will be coordinating a weekly reading group to study design thinking as it pertains to engineering design. We will have a special interest in how people learn how to do design, and we will focus on engineering design, including mechanical, electrical, and computational systems.

Readings will include research articles, book chapters, and theses. The format is simple: participants will jointly select material each week (typically, 40-50 pages) and discuss it the following.

Over the course of the semester, we hope to build a shared vocabulary and understanding that will develop into framing research questions into the study of design.

The group will meet for a hour weekly: Fridays from 10:30 am - 11:30 pm.

Student who wish to receive academic credit for their participation may arrange for a directed study with Prof. F. Martin. Additional work, including weekly short essays and two longer papers, will be required.
