Course Description
This course focuses on the development of keyboard musicianship,
including basic pianistic facility and ease at the keyboard, sight
reading and harmonization in treble and bass clefs, basic music
theory, and ensemble playing. 1 credit hour.
Required Text and Course Materials
- James Lyke. Keyboard Musicianship Vol. 1. Stipes Publishing.
Students will also need manuscript paper and No. 2 pencils.

Assignments
Assignments from the course text will be made during each class
period. Students will be expected to prepare each assignment outside
of class and will be quizzed on each assignment in class.
Expected Course Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course students will be able to
- play all twelve major scales hands-together, two octaves
- play all twelve harmonic minor scales hands-together, two octaves
- play half and full cadences in all keys
- harmonize simple melodies and make accompaniments for them
- sight-read simple keyboard pieces
- transpose simple keyboard pieces
- play simple duets and ensemble compositions
Class Attendance Policy
Regular attendance and participation are essential to the achievement
of the expected course outcomes above. Accordingly, the following
policy is in force:
- You are permitted three absences from class. After three,
the final course grade will be lowered one-half letter grade for
each additional absence.
- Make-up assignments, late assignments, and make-up quizzes,
tests, and exams, including the final exam, will NOT be
accepted or provided.
Tests and Grading
Grades in this course are determined primarily by attendance and by
the level of accomplishment as demonstrated in quizzes and tests. The
final grade will be the weighted average of the grades for quizzes
(50%) and the grades for the midterm and final exams (25% each),
subject to the attendance requirements described above.
