I. Write a Ws ftp Tutorial:
Before attempting to write this tutorial
the student should carefully examine the Example Response to the outline.
It took a little under 4 hours to prepare.
Outline for the tutorial
What is File Transfer Protocol (ftp)?
Overview: Ws_ftp as the Web builder's Swiss Army
knife.
It can transfer files between Student's Computer (Windows 95/NT) and
the Web Site (UNIX machine)
It can transfer files to/from machines that allow anonymous ftp
It can transfer files to/from machines that the user has accounts on.
It can rename, delete, view, and execute program files
It can provide data about creation dates, sizes, and access
How does one login?
Use gifs created in lab 9.
Explain how to login to a machine where user has an account.
Explain how to use anonymous logins for transfer of files from archie
and gopher sites
Link reference to information about archie and gopher sites.
Give an example of login to U Mass Lowell library
Get material from the Library of Congress
How does one move through the directory structure
of the user's machine and the remote host's?
Use the gif from lab 9 to illustrate the change of directory.
How does one transfer a file from one machine to
the other?
Use the gif with the file highlighted in blue for the example.
Talk about the special case where a file is in the student's working
directory and will replace one in the Web site.
How do files get "fixed"?
-
Renamed
-
Viewed and edited
-
Deleted
-
How does one find the latest file change? One with no content? Wrong Extension?
How does one re-establish a connection to the remote
host?
-
Why are connections lost -- time outs, computer crashes, network failure?
-
How do we know we have lost connection?
-
How do we login again?
-
How do we login into another computer?
How do we get help?
For extra credit what other features should be included?
The gifs that we have used can be made into image maps (client side)
as in lab 5. Here we make the buttons in the pictures the hot spots and
use the image like a table of contents. Each click on the button takes
us to an internal anchor (target) of the topic. Create a frame page and
use one frame as the tutorial overview Table Of Contents. Follow the process
in lab 6 to complete the tutorial. Use Paint Shop Pro to create a nice
logo.
Note that the bottom of the first page should be a Ws ftp logo
and copyright notice.
II. The Web Site Assignment
Using the Netscape Composer and other tools the student will create
a minimum of five web pages of text , images, graphics, and edited audio
video.
The Topic
The topic should be chosen by the student to reflect some subject or project
that is of interest and for whom the passion and creativity of doing the
job well goes beyond a grade. In prior years the following topics have
used:
-
Introduction to their hometown or region
-
The search for a birth mother
-
The history of a person who effected the student's life
-
The preservation of a skill or craft
-
The creation of a game
These generated strong interest and resulted in Web sites that the student
took great pride in the final result.
The Technical Skills Demonstration
The Web site should show that the student has mastered the basic technical
material in the course. To get full credit for technical issues the student
must include:
-
The use of a fully developed Head section using all the attributes to document
and detail origin of material, revisions, and other relevant material.
-
The Body of the material must match the style guide developed in the Design
Document and should use a color and background pattern effectively in a
manner that does not annoy the viewer or distract from the message.
-
Use all the List styles and text styles effectively.
-
Use Images created by the Student, i.e. Scanned in, created with a Graphics
package, or by using an imaging application (Paint Shop Pro). The Student
shall also capture images off the net and use them where appropriate giving
attribution in the html source code using comment tags.
-
Use Forms, Frames, Image Maps (Client Side), and Tables.
-
Use the Meta tag to create a slide show.
-
Use sound and video in an appropriate section of ten document.
-
Use Javascript either created by the student, captured from the net to
illustrate some interaction between the viewer and the page.
The Design Documentation
The Student will prepare a preliminary Design that will include:
-
An outline of the major ideas to be covered and include a definition of
the target audience.
-
Based on the outline and the definition create a look and feel format that
will attract and hold the intended audience.
-
A diagram of the nonlinear document that will form the basis for the individual
document pages connections and Hot Areas.
-
Specify what topic areas can be covered by existing Web sites and give
reasons for their inclusion.
-
The document will be coherent and complete and will provide the reader
with a polished and attractive harmony of multimedia objects.
-
The document should reflect a mature sense of Web design issues and exhibit
the student's creative and presentation skills.
-
Finally the Web site should include a Form page for reader feedback, Email
correspondence, and a counter. The Counter should offer the visitor a statistical
page that dynamically modifies bar charts and other graphics to reflect
site's prior visitors opinions and comments.
Style and Effective Design
The student will be graded on the total presentation of the idea.
Correct grammar, spelling, and composition of the graphics and images are
required for full credit. Computer Human Interface (CHI) factors such as
the ability to easily navigate the site, understandable icons and buttons,
and the ability to address the target audience are essential for major
credit.
-
Edited Audio Video
-
The student will take raw audio and video tracks and edit them into no
more than 15 seconds of audio/ video. The student will use an editor such
as Premiere or Sound Editor for this task or some similar product. The
students may use the Multi-media lab on either the South or North Campus
for this task.
