Welcome and How to get Started.

The File Menu

The NetScape 4.0 Browser

At the top of your screen you should see a menu bar that has a on the right hand corner. The lables File, Edit, View, GO, Bookmarks, Options, Directroy, and Window. Place the mouse cursor over the Lable, Window. and hold it down. Note that Pull-down Menu appears below the lable chose the last item, Introduction to the Netscape 4.0 Browser.(You chose the item in a Pull-down Menu by sliding the cursor over the item while continuing to hold down the mouse button; and then double clicking while over the item.) The Introduction will lead you through the basic structure of the Netscape Browser and how to use the various tools and utilities.

Creating, Sending, and Receiving E-mail

Using Bookmarks

Printing out the WWW page or its Source

Saving either the source file for the Web page or the text display

The Assignment

  1. First go the Computer Science Department Computer Center Olson Room 104 and get an account. . The Laboratory Assistants (LA's) will give you an account, a password to access it, and an E-mail address (which is based on your account name and the computer's name). Follow the LA's printed directions on protecting your password.
  2. Follow the directions of the above section on creating E-mail and compose a memo to yourself (use the E-mail address you got in step 1), cc the memo to the instructor using his/her E-mail address (see Syllabus).
  3. Having created the Memo in step 2, send it.
  4. Upon sending it you should see the Mulberry mail icon indicate that you now have E-mail. Follow the directions on how to read your mail and bring up the memo you sent yourself. Print it out and save a copy to turn it in. Now, write a message on your memo that you have read it and send it back to yourself.
  5. Now send E-mail to some friend who is off campus. Email the cc to yourself. Print the message and turn it in. (If you don't have an off campus friend, E-mail your congress person a letter.)
  6. Now you are ready to take on the Internet:
  7. Now record the Images you like by saving them to your floppy disk or your zip disk.
