How to create the example

This image map was created with the Coffeecup shareware package Image

Mapper++ found at www.coffeecup.com

The source map was taken off the net from a Mapquest site and used as a starting point for the example. The Student should begin by selecting a map and capturing like a normal image.

The exercise asks the student to define one or more hot spots in three shapes (rectangluar, circular, and polygonal)

Note the Image Mapper allows us to select a shape and define it by clicking at the starting location and then expanding the rectangle or circle to the desired size and then double clicking

Once an area has been defined the user is asked

to: select the URL to be linked
give a text discription for Alt (the Alternative in sase the Image cannot be displayed)
give a message for the status bar when the mouse is over the hot spot.

The map is copied to the clipboard when the map is completed

Using the Netscape Editor the clipboard is pasted into the table element.

This is done by clicking on Insert .. then selecting html tag and using Contol V to paste into the tag ( this may not always work)

What will

always work is set up Composer's preferences so that html text is edited by

Wordpad)

AND SIMPLY PASTE AS YOU NORMALLY WOULD INTO THE DOCUMENT... i.e.

After the image map is saved on the Clipboard open the Composer
Select Edit/HTML source which will open up Wordpad to HTML source document.
Find the location of the Image and after it Paste the contents of the Clip Board
Save the document as Text only and return to Composer
Composer will complain that the document has been changed say ok
The Composer will display the image surrounded by Tag Icons.
Your mouse will expose the contents of the new image map tags as you touch them.
