Subject: Re: t-and-f: High School Trivia Help Date: Tue, 7 Apr 1998 11:00:30 -0400 From: "David Morris Honea" To: phoffman@cs.uml.edu The best North Carolina time since the switch to metric is Hichman's 9:03 2-mile at Pathmark in '87 (we were in the same year, but unfortunately rarely raced since we were in different size classes. Also, he played soccer so his cross country results were never outstanding.) But, I always heard in high school that the state record (only kept for the state meet itself) was significantly faster for 2 miles before the switch. Specifically, that two guys the same year were under 9:10, and one of them had a time that would convert to sub-9:00 for 3200 - maybe 9:02 and 9:08? (The vagueness here is not in my memory, but in the original telling.) Anyway, they threw out all the yard records with the switch to metric and started over, and the state (meet) record has gradually come down to 9:08.?? now. I can tell you with certainty that no one (other than Hichman) has run faster than that in any meet since 1984, but there is no guarantee that it wasn't done somewhere other than the state meet earlier. david -- david honea Electrical & Computer Engineering dmhonea@eos.ncsu.edu North Carolina State Univ.
