Subject: Re: Updates to HS mile and 2 mile list Date: Tue, 12 Jan 1999 18:44:42 -0800 From: "Martin C. Dobbins" To: phoffman@cs.uml.edu Patrick, It's been awhile since I last emailed you regarding your HS mile/2mile list. I enjoy the updates you have put in. I have three challenges for you if you have the time: 1) It would be interesting to see if anyone out there has some stories about the McChesney brothers from South Eugene. I first started running in 1976 and one of my first distance idols was Bill McChesney. He was the star of the family: 3 time State cross country and 2mile champ, PRs of 1:56, 4:07, 8:50, 14:12m, 29:06m (as a junior!). His race in the 1975 AAU Junior 10K still boggles the mind. He ran 29:27 as a soph and led Chapa and Hulst until the last three laps. Maybe the greatest prep distance race of all time. Bill's two older brothers were not too shabby either, with Tom running 8:53 in 1973 and Steve running 9:04 in 1975. They have to be the three fastest brothers in high school distance running history! For two brothers, it is close between Tom/Bill, the Assummas and the Mastilirs. Tom died in a tragic bike accident in 1986. Bill died in a car accident in 1992, eerily mimicking the life of Pre. 2) Another interesting topic would be to find out the greatest HS mile and 2mile of all time. I guess the 97 Nationals with Karie, Jennings, Riley and Travis is one of the best miles. For the 2 mile, try to find the results of the 1976 Arcadia Invitational (Hunt 8:45, Hulst 8:47, many others under 9:00), 1975 Cal State meet (Hulst 8:44, Serna 8:45, others under 9:00) and 1975 Arcadia Invitational. I haven't been able to locate the detailed results and am relying on memory. 3) Bonus challenge. Another great prep 2 miler, Alan Scharsu, is based out of San Diego and he can be found on the web if you search his name (his employer lists his email, last time I checked). It would be interesting to get an update from him, maybe a brief bio on his high school career. FYI, he was very precocious running 9:15 as a 14 year old 9th grader, 9:05 as a soph, 8:45 as a junior and 8:44 as a senior in 1978. Went to Penn State and did pretty well in the 5K (13:40 range). Thanks for keeping up the site Marty Dobbins
