Girls' Race 1994 Footlocker National HS XC championships ,San Diago, CA

Julia Stamps first and nobody (or everybody) in second. She missed the course
record of 16:39 by a couple of seconds, but she destroyed the field.

Defending champ Erin Davis gave it a good try. Stamps moved into the lead
right at the start and Davis went with her. Stamps began to pull away and by
1/2 mile had about 5 meter lead. Davis was hanging tough in second trying to
keep up. Stamps relentlessly kept the pressure up and increased her lead
steadily throughout the race. Carrie Tollefson and Sally Glynn were hanging
with Davis. Mary Cobb had moved into the second place pack by two miles, but
Stamps had broken contact. Davis faded a little bit, tired from trying to run
with Stamps I suppose. At the finish, Stamps showed she still had plenty
left by putting on a fine kick. A great victory for a fine young talent. The
Northeast won the team race.

I quite giving times here when I realized I had one missing, but I don't know
whose. So there my be a frame shift in here somewhere. Note: #19 Conchola is
a freshman who took up the sport less than a year ago.

Boys' Race

There was no clear favorite going in. And it went that way through much of the

race. For most of the race there was a large pack in contention up at the
front. Hard to say who was "leading" at any given point. The Hauser twins
were in that lead pack but faded by the end. Sharif Muse Karie moved into the
lead at one point, which was something of a surprise since his name had not
been on anybody's lips pre-race. But he faded a bit too. In the last mile,
Matt Downin and John Mortimer pulled ahead to the same 1 - 2 finish that they
scored in the Northeast Regional. Big win, but those two were about all the
Northeast had near the front, so the Western Team took the title (I think -
this was my own mental score-keeping).

Here are the Top 20 Finishers from the Foot Locker Midwest Regional held
@ the Parkside National Cross Country Course on the campus of U of Wis-
Parkside, Kenosha, WI. It was a reasonable running day, but pretty
chilly for workers and spectators. 35 degrees, mostly cloudy, and a
10-20 mph breeze SE off of LakeMichigan. The Course was is great
November shape. Dry and frozen to thawing during the morning. As good

as it gets in Kenosha for this time of year. The Top 8 advance to the
finals in San Diego on December 10th. The Boys Seeded race had 249
finishers (of which 185 finished between 15:11 and 17:11). The Girls
ran 1 race of 407 finishers, it was not as "hectic" as the boys!
