Kevin Dunbar (Former UID)
University of Minnesota at Brochville, Ont.
IOWA STATE COACH BILL BERGEN (NCAA champions) : "Our goal was to have
five All-Americans and we had five of the top 21 so we accomplished
that. We ran as well as could be expected. Ian Robinson would have
finished higher but he strained a calf muscle early in the race. It
loosened up for him at about the halfway point. We were lucky he could
finish."

"We were fortunate. We expected it to be much closer. We thought
Arkanas would run better at home. We knew Colorado was good. They are
better than they were ranked. The Big 8 is real strong and the conference
meet helped us because we were challenged."

"We were running well at the halfway point but the race really
doesn't even begin until then and anything can happen in 5000 metres. I
didn't feel confident until they told me the final score. We knew
Arkansas and Wisconsin didn't have many people up front with us, but we
knew Colorado did."

MARTIN KEINO, Arizona, Champion : " This is the biggest win of my career.
I've always wanted to win an NCAA Championship. I'm really happy. It's a
good course, muddy and hilly. The hills didn't bother me. I had planned
to make a move after four kilometres but the first two came so easy, I
went ahead and made my move then. There wasn't much strategy after that.
I ran faster than I have all year but felt comfortable. I was prepared to
kick if anyone made a move but it never happened."

ADAM GOUCHER, Colorado, Second Place : "I may have waited too long to
move up but Martin was in a zone. I was pretty far back most of the race.
I was consistently seeing other runners and was hoping they would come
back to me. By the time I moved into second place, he was too far ahead
of me. I tried and made up some ground but didn't have enough time left."

KEVIN SULLIVAN, Michigan, Third Place : "The race was a little slower
than I thought it would be. Other than that it unfolded about like I
expected."
