To: Ken Kleiner cc: 2kf523 SUBJ: CVS versions and info sources: RJLRef: $CASE/cvs/CVSsourcesHelp.2k0323 Hi, Ken - I need some info on the status of our version of CVS. (WHich version? Does it support networked checkin/out that was being tested in CVS version 6 around 1996. In 1999 the latest CVS rev. was 10.1.7 (see below). Joe Francis showed me this book in 91.523 tonight: Karl Fogel: Open Source Development with CVS - CoriolisPress 1999 (315 pp, $40). It updates the 1994-1996 docs in $CASE/cvs and its three subdirectories. On page 302 it says Cyclic Software who maintained CVS was sold to SourceGear Corp who "made a mucn-needed bug fix release (1.10.7)". Patches were only distributed thru the website www.cyclic.com. The book says SourceGear is working on integrating thes patches into a new release. It also maintains www.cyclic.com. There exists a news group info-cvs@gnu.org. http://www.gnu.org/links/links.html has a link to Cyclic Software which points to the URL http://www.sourcegear.com/CVS. AT that URL I found this news release (extract): ----------------- OpenAvenue Acquires CodeCatalog and Cyclic.com from SourceGear .... OpenAvenue also acquired SourceGear's Cyclic.com, a popular Web destination for developers using the Concurrent Versions System (CVS), the leading version control tool for open-source developers. OpenAvenue will further SourceGear's initiative to support the open community development of CVS, work to enhance its functionality, and remain committed to its status as free software. "Thousands of developers visit Cyclic.com each week to get CVS and the information they need to help them use it," said Eric Sink, SourceGear founder and chief executive officer. "I am pleased that under OpenAvenue's stewardship, CVS will continue to grow and enhance its momentum as the most popular tool for open source developers." .... ------------------ I don't know what CVS version UMLowell is up to. In particular, Jim Kingdon of Cygnus who *was* Cyclic SW added network capability to CVS. It was being tested and had problems back in 1995. In $CASE/cvs, I unzipped info-cvs.Z to 1MB; the last message saved there is from Oct 1995, when I unsubscribed to that user group. It mentions cvs versions 5 and 6. I just sent this subscribe message to info-cvs@prep.ai.mit.edu. SUBJ: subscribe info-cvs lechner@cs.uml.edu to regain new info. If you use CVS at work or home you may want to do the same. I don't know if our CVS can support CVS remote PC clients. With networked CVS, bde and chgen could be maintained from and debugged on a PC running Linux and X11.
