Tip-of-the-Day

91.520-Internet and Web Systems

(Last updated: October 1, 1998.)

Suppose you are an expert in something, and you want to provide tips to people who need help in that topic. You set up a web site where every day a different tip on the topic appears. Better even, perhaps you can be smart enough to detect the visitor and provide him/her a new tip every time s/he visits your site, even in the same day. The site would be boring if a visitor got repeated tips. You have to keep it interesting, never boring!

Now think as a tool maker. If you could create a tool that would build the entire structure around a site like this, the information provider will only have to populate a database of some sort with the collection of knowledge s/he has (the "tips") and will be all set.

In this project you can take two routes:

  1. The simpler route: Create a "tip-of-the-day" site on a favorite topic of yours.
  2. More interesting (and complicated): Create a tool that allows anybody to create a "tip-of-the-day" site on whatever topics s/he would like to, easily.
