SGML-to-HTML converter

(Under constant construction; last updated: September 24, 1998)

The idea is to store documents in SGML - a much richer format than HTML at the moment is. When time comes to present a document on the Web, use this filter to create an HTML document with the maximal capabilities of HTML at that time. When HTML becomes more powerful, change the converter instead of having to redevelop all documents. (This is related also to the TeX/LaTeX-to-HTML converter project.)

There are lots of potentials along this direction, since electronic publishing is going to become more and more prevalent, alongside traditional publishing. As a result, new document type definitions (DTD in SGML lingo) will have to be developed, and in the long run, a publishing house will have to have tools to manage versions on numerous document types. This create the potential for advanced work along this direction.

Be creative.
