PRINTING NOTES FOR THE LOGO UPDATE SERIES ----------------------------------------- Fred Martin Thu Feb 17 10:51:39 1994 The Logo Update newsletter is provided in the form of a PostScript file. A PostScript printer is required in order to print these files. * DOWNLOADING The Logo Update files are stored in compressed form. When downloading the files, make sure to put the transfer program into "binary" mode. For FTP, type "binary" at the prompt. Note: do not use "MacBinary" mode; this is something different. After you have downloaded the file to your computer, you must decompress it. If you are running a Unix system, this is done by typing "uncompress filename" at the prompt. If you are using a Macintosh, you need a utility such as MacCompress to do this. For your convenience, a copy of MacCompress program is available on this server in file pub/logo/software/mac-utils/maccompress-32.hqx. * PRINTING A PostScript printer with the following fonts is required: - New Century School Book - Times - Courier - Zapf Dingbats - Bookman All Apple LaserWriters have the necessary fonts; other laser printers, particularly ones with only 17 fonts, will probably not have New Century School Book, Bookman, and/or Zapf Dingbats. If your laser printer does not have the required fonts, you can try printing anyway; most printers will substitute a font in place of one it does not have. If this happens, the document will print, but it won't look so nice. The PostScript code is produced by PageMaker 4.0, which has an idiosyncratic PostScript generator. For this reason, it is best to reboot your printer just before submitting the Logo Update print job (to remove any incompatible definitions from the printer's memory). When printing from a Macintosh, a utility such as "Drop*PS" is required in order to submit a job that is already in PostScript form. This utility is available here on cherupakha, in file pub/logo/software/mac-utils/Drop_PS_1.0.sit.hqx. The newsletter has a fairly complex page layout---don't be surprised if each page takes several minutes to print (particularly on older laser printers). * OTHER OPTIONS. If all else fails, you can always ask for a hard-copy subscription from the Logo Foundation. Their address is provided in the README file in this directory. We hope to also provide plain-text ASCII files of the articles in each Logo Update. While we can't supply diagrams in this format, at least the text content of the newsletter will be available. * QUESTIONS? PROBLEMS? Please send e-mail to Fred Martin (fredm@media.mit.edu). Thanks.
