Introduction

Our client is THE Farm, and we are in the phase where we brainstorm any ideas for the sensory trail.

A sensory trail is a trail through an area that a person travels on horseback. There are stations that

the rider will stop at and complete certain tasks that will stimulate a certain sense, like touch, sight,

hearing, or even smell. We must recruit other groups in order to make this trail successful. If you are

interested in joining the Redaro team in this project, then we will be happy to have you help us. You will

help us create a wonderful trail that will help many disabled patients for many years if all goes well.

Anybody who helps in making this trail will have their name engraved on a placque and will be remembered by

THE Farm for as long as the trail stands. Let's help make this sensory trail be the best that it can be!

Each group is assigned the same task for now. Further instructions are below.

Instructions

The first thing we should think about is the design of the sensory trail. Each group will come up with at

least six station ideas. Three will involve electronics, and the other three will be simple stations. This

should split the work up evenly amoungst the group. If anyone has more ideas, don't hesitate to add them to

your list.

Guidelines

There are a few things we have to keep in mind while actually designing the trail, and these could also help

when we are brainstorming the ideas:

  • WEATHER PROOF- This a huge thing to incorporate with the design, because the trail has to survive
all weather conditions, so it would be a good idea to think of something that wouldn't get destroyed easily
  • Money- Depending on how many groups actually work on this project, this might not be that much of an issue,
and some stations can be very simple, and therefore, very cheap.
  • Safety- We must make sure that these stations will not harm anyone, especially the riders and horses.
  • Simplicity of Design- We do not want trap doors or intricately designed paths that could get people lost.
For the most part, this track will not be that large, probably slightly smaller than half a football field.
Also, the path will most likely be the shape of a race track, a circle, or a figure eight. Try to make sure
that the stations are not too hard to do, because the trail will be used by a lot of disabled clients, all
with different disabilities to deal with.
  • Size of the Stations- We want the stations to be large enough so the people can see what is going on, but
small enough to not freak people out, or the horses. The stations should be at least five feet off the ground.
  • No loud noises or vibrations- horses can get spooked very easily.

Suggestions

These are the notes that were taken at the first meeting with THE Farm. These are suggestions of what could be

at the stations, but this list does not bind us to these ideas and materials. These are only here incase someone

needs gets stuck on thinking of an idea for a station. The people at THE Farm are pretty open to whatever we come

up with. They have left us in charge of the whole thing. Here are the suggestions of what we could use in the

stations:

  • Different ground surfaces
  • Different smells (flowers, air fresheners, etc)
  • Signs saying do this from here to here (Ex. Trot from Green Triangle to Red Circle)
  • Chalkboard or plywood with chalk paint
  • Bubbles
  • A bridge
  • Mail boxes with tactile stuff inside, magnets, buttons, or mirrors
  • Shape board
  • Clothes line
  • Bells or buzzers
  • Basketball hoop
  • Plinko Board (Like the one from the Price is Right)
  • Fake Christmas tree to decorate
  • Blue tarp "pond" that has velcro or magnetic fish and fishing rods with velcro or a magnet
  • Eye glasses with easter egg dye on the lenses
  • Reward stand (water, lemonade, or something like that)
  • Prisms
  • Bird feeders
  • Spinners
  • Windchimes
  • Pool noodles or boas
  • Touch lights or clap on lights

Remember, we are not bound by this list, come up with watever you want! Try to come up with the

ideas by March 13. The Redaro team will then present the ideas to THE Farm and they will pick the

stations they like the best, and we will move on from there.
