FredMartinHi everyone! I am an assistant professor in the Computer Science department. I have liked robots and electronics since I was a little kid. When I was a teenager I had a Radio Shack TRS-80 computer (if you TEAMS students know what that is, you are pretty geeky -- come talk to to me :-) and I wrote lots of code for it. I loved math and was really good at it, and I went to MIT when I was 17. I stayed there for a long time and did all my degrees there, starting with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and ending with a PhD in Media Arts and Sciences. As a PhD student I studied how undergraduates learn engineering by designing their own contest robots. This was about 15 years ago, when the idea of students building their own robots was pretty new. I finally left MIT and came to UMass Lowell in 2002. I am really happy here. There are a lot of great people, including many students, staff, faculty, and the administration (the equivalent of the managers if you were working at a company). I'm looking forward to meeting you this semester and I'm really glad so many of you are joining this educational experiment with us. There is more info about me at http://www.cs.uml.edu/~fredm, and info about some of the projects I work on with my students is here. This is a picture of me when I was about 1 year old :-) ![]() |
