Chris Leger Independent Study

Goals For The Course:

  • Work out mathematical models needed to track objects in space from a fixed point on earth (involves some interesting multivariable

calculus).

  • Learn how to program a microprocessor in C to drive servos to test the models. Then end goal would be to develop a drive

system for the large telescope I built that we could then use to support the astronomy class.

Side Notes:

  • Look into submitting the project as part of the Massacusetts Science & Engineering fair or BotFest
  • set up and test equipment for my physics classes and grade 9 STEM class

Celestial Coordinates:

Attach:Star_Calculator.xls

This excel document is what I created using the documents: Attach:Sidereal_Calculation.pdf and Attach:Sidereal_Time.pdf inorder to calculate the present location of a star from the observer's viewpoint. Right Ascension, declination of the star, current time, latitude and longitude of the observer, are all required inputs. The Altitude and Azimuth of the star in question is the output.

Powerpoint Used at Botfest
