Proposed 2008 - 2009 Application Process & Schedule

First year program:

• Use last year's application
  • General application
  • One math, one science recommendation
  • One Guidance recommendation
  • One optional other recommendation
  • One essay
  • Applicant invited to include additional supporting documents
  • We will make modifications to last year's application as needed

Second Year Program

• Offer admission to current TEAMS students in good standing
• Review prior year applicants and make early offers to top candidates (update grades)
• Depending on type of program offered for second year, consider changes to application

What qualifications should TEAMS applicants have? Prerequisites? Who should we recruit?

• Math:
  • Must be enrolled in the top level of math courses appropriate for their grade level
  • Must have completed honors Algebra, Advanced Algebra, and Geometry courses
  • Students should have taken "at least some" trigonometry (including vectors) prior to second TEAMS semester
• Science:
  • Most students had completed a year of chemistry and biology prior to entering TEAMS - possible prerequisite for Environmental Biotechnology
  • A few were taking chemistry or biology concurrently - perhaps set up summer assignment for all students to self-study key topics
  • Conceptual Physical Science (e.g., 9th grade "physics first") or standard physics course helpful, but not required
  • We'll know more about needs for Bat Engineering Design and Assistive Technology & Electronics by end of February
• Other information used collected last year (not necessarily used by committee):
  • Class rank (when available)
  • Pre-SAT or SAT scores

Selection Process

• Use similar selection process (4 reviewers from different schools, Director is chairperson)
• Perhaps add TEAMS Faculty member and UML Faculty member to admissions committee
