PCR and Gel ElectrophoresisHomework: Biodiversity of Aquatic OrganismsPart A:Read the attached article and answer the following questions. 1. What is the main point of the article?
2. What did you learn?
3. Do you think that the human genome project is/was worthwhile? What implications do you think it will/has had on the future of genetic research?
4. Why would pharmaceutical companies be interested in the discovery of new human genes?
Part B:Complete the biotech online simulation on page 120 (Ch. 4) of the handout. Complete the questions that follow the activity [#1-10].
Part C:There is a strain of bacteria that is causing a tremendous amount of illness in your school building. It is a strain of bacteria that are highly resistant to antibiotics. You have been told that the particular strain and is highly infectious. Currently there are three people in your high school who are suspected of carrying the highly resistant strain of bacteria and have open wounds that allow access to the bacteria. The first is a member of the swim team, the second a member of the drama guild, and last but not least a faculty member. You need a quick way to identify the exact carrier of the infectious strain so you can treat anyone who has been in contact with the individuals. Time is critical. What is a quick way to identify the person? You can assume you have a gene of interest for the highly infectious bacteria.
Please be sure to state ALL the steps involved from isolating the bacteria to resolving the gene.
