Step 3: Brainstorming possible solutions

Back to Engineering Design Process

by Don Rhine

OK, this stage is fun and relatively easy. Get your group together and have and old-fashioned brainstorming session. How many ways can think of solving the client's problem?

Here's what your teams should do...

  1. Get everyone in one room - best to have a white board (wiki???) to use
  2. Buy a large pizza
  3. Buy some soda
  4. Socialize a bit, and talk about your client a bit
  5. Then start throwing out ideas
  6. DO NOT be critical of any ideas (yet!)
  7. Off the wall ideas often have great insights!
  8. As a group, you should be able to list about twenty different ways to tackle this problem (some rational, some zany, and some in between!)
  9. Go home, get a good night's sleep.
  10. When you wake up, think about the problem again. Any new ideas???

Tasks to complete to finish Step 3: (Due Feb 29)

  • Create a brainstorming wiki page and list the ideas you came up with.
  • Please include the name of the person who came up with the brilliant idea.
  • Ideas should be short, but zanier ones may need a sentence or two of explanation (or, a picture is worth a thjousand words)

...back to Step 2 or on to Step 4...
