Safety
Soldering
- Review this video for proper soldering technique http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I_NU2ruzyc4&feature=related
- Be aware of your surroundings! Soldering Irons get Extremely hot!
- They melt soldering metal , and this molten metal can splatter or drip, so always be aware of what is around you.
- Remove clutter from your work area and make sure you are not in a place where someone might bump into you.
- ALWAYS wear safety glasses when you are soldering!
- Be aware of the vapors.
- The vapors produced when you are soldering are toxic, so make sure you are in a well ventilated area.
- Take the quiz
Electrocution
- We'll be using low voltage ckts (Fairly safe)
- Be careful with capacitors, especially big ones
Your own circuits
- use properly rated components
- e.g., when using a 1/4 watt resistor, don't exceed 1/4 W of power dissipation!!
- e.g., switches have contact rating in amperes--if you exceed the rating, you'll burn/arc the contacts (light switch becomes a light bulb/fire ball)
- Go on line to read data sheets for the parts you use in a circuit to find out the maximum current, voltage, or power
- Electrolytic caps can explode - look at voltage rating
- circuit components can get hot
- smoke test - if you smell smoke or feel something getting warm--shut off power ASAP (pull out ground or power wire)
- Be careful of short circuits - check circuit BEFORE you plug into power
