Steps for Making a Printed Circuit Board - Etching Process

Caution!

The chemical etching process entails the use of corresive etching solutions that can be hazardous if the appropriate precautions are not taken!!

  • You must carefully read, understand, and follow all manufacturer usage instructions and safety protocols.
  • Always wear safety goggles, neoprene gloves, and a protective lab coat. Do not wear loose or baggy clothing or jewelry. Wear long pants and full shoes (no sandals or other open shoes).
  • You must dispose of used or excess etching chemicals properly. NEVER POUR ETCHING CHEMICALS INTO ANY SINK OR TOILET. Follow MSDS instructions and proper university protocol when disposing of chemicals.

Materials Needed

Radio Shack may still carry Ferric Chloride etching and other PCB supplies. Kelvin.com is another source, although they are sometimes slow to ship.

  • Etching Solution
    • 20% Ammonium Persulphate Solution ...or...
    • Ferric Chloride Solution
