Session3

Present: Fred, Doug, Sachiko.

We talked mostly about Ch 6 material, including "opportunism" in design, which Cross reports as depth-first alongside breadth-first, as a "normative" design approach carried out with fluency by experts.

Doug and Fred collaborated to make the following "design cycles" graph:

This denotes an iterative/recursive process of analysis, synthesis, and evaluation, with possible problem-reframing between each iteration.

  • The diagram in the lower left suggests a given whole-project design cycle consists of several inner cycles of analysis, synthesis, and evaluation.
  • The diagram in the lower right suggests depth-first excursions of various depth each time.
