This page explains to how initially configure Analog Device's VDSP++ 4.5 for use with the Blackfin Handy Board.

Start off by downloading the Handy Board Board Support Package at BlackfinHBV2, then follow the instructions below.

Installing the Debug Agent drivers for the Handy Board

  1. Install Visual DSP++.
  2. Connect the Handy Board via the USB cable and turn the Handy Board on.
  3. Follow readme.txt inside folder Debug Agent Setup Files (from ZIP above).
  4. In Windows' New Hardware Wizard, point it at the "Debug Agent Setup Files" folder.
  5. Now you will get the error "The file WmUsbIce.sys is needed". This file is in \Program Files\Analog Devices\VisualDSP 4.5\Setup\Emu_Drivers\. Navigate to this directory to point Windows at the file.
  6. The wizard should now finish properly. To verify, right-click on My Computer, choose Properties, then the Hardware tab, and then Device Manager. You should see an entry named "ADI Development Tools" which should contain "BF537 Handy Board."

Using the Configurator to Create a Configuration for the Handy Board

  1. Connect the Handy Board via the USB cable and turn the Handy Board on.
  2. Go into Start Menu:Analog Devices:VisualDSP++ 4.5:VisualDSP++ Configurator.
  3. In left column, select "ADSP-BF537 EZ-KIT Lite."
  4. Click on Test.
    1. The dialog should show "BF537 Handy Board USB EZ-KIT" as Type.
    2. Click on Start.
    3. It should run through the 5 tests without error.
    4. Click Exit.
  5. Click OK to exit the Configurator.

Obtaining a KIT License So As To Be Able to Use the EZ-KIT Target

  1. Find the paper CDR sleeve from the VDSP++ software.
  2. Go into Start Menu:Analog Devices:VisualDSP++ 4.5:Manage Licenses.
  3. Click on New.
  4. Enter "KIT-" serial number from the CDR sleeve.
  5. You should then immediately receive a KIT license valid for 10 days.
  6. You will have to register the software to extend this for a total of 90 days.
  7. Academic users: there will be a process for you to obtain a discounted license to VDSP.

Creating a Session to Communicate with the Handy Board

  1. Connect the Handy Board via USB and turn it on.
  2. Launch VisualDSP++.
  3. Go into Session:New Session.
    1. Highlight "Select Processor." Choose Processor family: Blackfin. Choose "ADSP-BF537 Blackfin processor (132K bytes on-chip memory)." Click Next.
    2. For Connection Type, choose EZ-KIT Lite. Click Next.
    3. For Select Platform, choose "ADSP-BF537 Handy Board via Debug Agent."
    4. Click Finish.
  4. VDSP should now automatically connect to the Handy Board! If so, you will see a Disassembly window on the right-hand column of the screen.
  5. Congratulations! You are ready to start programming. Continue with Your First Program.
